Strategic Supplementation

Without a good strategic supplementation plan good economic animal production is difficult to achieve.  Getting that supplementation to your livestock in an efficient way is also critical. It needs to be available in a way that is extensive enough to reduce competition but not so extensive as to be unmanageable.  If you are using high urea based licks dealing with rain is also critical, if rain gets in then the trough must be emptied.

This webpage is a pictorial back up to the section in A Herd Owner's Manual that deals with supplementation.

Mobility is key: they should either have wheels or be moveable by one person.

Low tech lick troughs

Raised troughs: Keeping cattle lick out of reach of your sheep when grazing as a flerd.

Water 'proof' mobile lick troughs

Long distance from water, high urea lick - you need a lick trough system that is dragged along with the grazing line to ensure that the animals take in lick thoughout the day.
